Regarding to how early writers are influenced by western languages. The renowned poet and translator 余光中 has written quite a lot about it. Below are some examples he mentioned in his articles.

Deliberate plurals. Traditionally plurals are only used when absolutely necessary. In the following sentence the reader doesn’t actually care whether it’s one fly, a group of flies, or fly as a species. Therefore, it’s better to leave it out.

Weekend. Ate some good lunch w/ family. Long afternoon naps. 20km biking with wyh in the evening. The summer evening breeze is quite enjoyable.

So the first half of the year consists of the lockdown, the work-from-home, and the generally slacking of because of my mental status. This should not continue. From the first day of the second half of the year, I will try to do more, like writing useless journals about what I do. This shall be the first, and this is what I did today:

Introduced my son to the Chinese version of Hikaru No Go. In fact I’m trying to teach him how to play Go. He’s far less interested in it than for example meteoric events, but this TV drama is good fun.
Watched one episode of The Boys. I don’t quite like it.
Failed in upgrading Webpack 4 to Webpack 5 for the work project, again. Why does it have to be so complex.
Ate some good 馄饨 today, some exotic ingredients. Son says he liked the corn flavored ones.
I should plan for what’s going to do next.

Remember to update playwright scripts

We’ve had a repo that uses playwright for testing. The test runs daily with Jenkins and Docker. It’s been quite stable and haven’t been updated for a good year. Yesterday I tried to update playwright to the most recent version, but after updating, CI stopped working:

I did feel the love from Playwright team. However, running the command in the Dockerfile solved nothing. It reported that every dependency was ready and up-to-date, and the test still kept failing as before.

中国古籍保护网 is a project of the National library that incorporates all the links to local libraries that have open-access scans of classical books. It’s not that open though. Some of them requires you to have an account.
汉典重光 is a project by Alibaba that aims to digitize the rare classical copies. It mainly focuses on the books that are located abroad.

Recently I’m trying to learn rust by rewriting one of my typescript libraries into rust. The purpose of the articles is that I record myself sorting things out and trying to understand stuff. They are mostly memos or notes that I serve myself. Though i’d be glad if you find it interesting, and even happier if you could point out errors and directions. Cheers.

The project I’m rewriting is silabacion. It divides Spanish words into syllables, and tries to provide as many phonetic features as possible. There isn’t much about it, just lots of string manipulation and pattern matching. It should be a good exercise to rewrite it with rust, and the result could be useful for those 5 people who process Spanish words with rust, so why not?

Today I found an implementation of is_vowel by BartMassey. It’s a much advanced implementation. I’ll try to analyze the code. Bear in mind that there is still much that I don’t know or understand.

The Cargo.toml indicates that two external dependencies are used:

once_cell that provides cell-like types.
unicode-normalization that does what the name says.

What is a cell-like type? See std::cell. It’s “shareable mutable container”, and the rest is a blur. I think I’ll revisit it later.

Have you noticed that 咖 is pronounced kā in 咖啡(kāfēi, coffee), and gā in 咖喱(gāli, curry)?

I didn’t notice until yesterday, though I already knew. Human brains are funny devices.

The word 咖喱 doesn’t sound much like the English “curry”, to the point that for long I’ve had a misconception that garlic means 咖喱. Now that I know 咖喱 is the phonetic translation of the Tamil word “kari”, I feel much better. Though I still don’t know why it has to be “gā”.

I installed NodeJS 14 LTS with package managers.On Windows I installed scoop. On Mac I installed brew.

Installing gatsby-cli appears to be smooth on both platforms. I saw no error on both Windows and Mac.

npm install -g gatsby-cli

npm install is quite slow in China. There are Chinese NPM mirrors. If you don’t want to use the mirrors, you can use VPN to speed things up.

Here are a list of famous amateur weiqi players in China. Note that people stronger than 5d aren’t included.

Mao Zedong. According to an article, Mao zedong and Zhu De played weiqi in JingGang Mountains. They were using a hand drawed paper goban, didn’t notice there were 20 lines until the end….
General Zhu De. See above.
General Chen Yi. He has always been carrying a small 13x13 goban with him, even when fighting on the battlefield. The CWA was founded under his help. View his game
Ge You, comedy actor. He once said he has played weiqi all the time when he was at school. He said he only knew how atari works, didn’t know a single joseki, but it was really fun.
Li Yapeng, the most unwelcomed actor in China because of his lousy acting skills and bad-mannered-kinda personality. He was chosen for the 2004 weiqi propagator by CWA.
Gao Feng or someone else, Pro soccer player. I’m not a soccer fan so I don’t remember his name, but word has it that he often went to Weiqi pro’s apartment to ask for 9h teaching games….
Li Guyi, singer. Rumor has it that she is also a fan of weiqi. Evidence needed.
